For pilots looking the scream of a real engine and smell of
nitro we provide this guide to engine and exhausts.
The RC helicopter relies on its
engine more than any other form of radio controlled model.
RC planes can glide in for a landing, RC cars and trucks
simply coast to a stop and RC boats will continue to float
if their engines quit. Helicopters on the other hand depend
on engine power to stay in the air.
As outlined in the previous
chapter, 30 size nitro helicopter fly for up to 15 minutes
which will cost about £1.63 (based on 11 tanks per gallon
which costs £18).
Engines are designed
specifically designed for helicopter as they have limited
cooling compared to a radio controlled plane, it is
recommended to purchase a well known make of engine for
reliability and spares availability.

30 Size Engines
30 size engines come in
varying sizes from 32 - 40 from different manufacturers,
from experience at the flying field the OS 32 SX-H and OS 37
SZ-H are the best choice, they are easy to tune and offer
excellent reliability.
The Thunder Tiger TT39 and
MDS 38 have proved most troublesome, we have spent many a
weekend fiddling with engine tuning to try and get them to
right.
50 Size Engines
50 size engines come in sizes
from 46 - 53 from varying different manufacturers, from
experience at the flying field the OS 50 Hyper (same as the
Align 50 Hyper) is an excellent choice however it does tend
to go through rear bearings, the Thunder Tiger Redline seems
to perform well and is straightforward to tune.
The original Thunder Tiger
51 & Webra 50 AAR have been a bit troublesome to get running
right. Exhausts
There are two many types of
helicopter exhausts are available:
Tuned Pipe - A tuned
pipe has been specifically tuned to provide the optimum
performance from engine, tuned pipes offer the highest
performance but tend to noisier. The Hatori 522, Outrage 50
and muscle pipe MP5 are very good tuned pipes, we have
experienced a few issues with the Align 50 size pipe with
it's baffles coming loose.
Muffler - Mufflers are
typically cheaper than equivalent tuned pipes, mufflers do
not provide as much power but tend to be quieter. the Hatori
546 and Zimmermann 50 size are good muffler choices.
